Jail Criminal Record How to Choose a Criminal Lawyer
Correctional Facilities and Public Records Portal

When faced with a criminal charge, it is essential to choose a criminal defence lawyer with a thorough understanding of the type of case you are involved in, as well as the processes relevant to criminal law. For an increased chance of success in your criminal case, keep the following tips in mind when selecting a criminal lawyer.

Before you begin your search, narrow all possible results by deciding what type of attorney will best suit your needs. Some lawyers specialize in certain types of criminal law, such as, for example, tax law. Fix your budget for legal help – if you are experiencing financial difficulties, public defence attorneys are available as an alternative to the more expensive private denfenders. Keep in mind, however, that it may be more difficult to find an experienced and thorough attorney if you limit your search to practitioners of public defence.

Experience and achievements will be reflected in the legal organizations a lawyer belongs to. Some of the most important are the County Bar and State Bar associations, and, for criminal defence attroneys, the National Association for Criminal Defence Lawyers. State bars will indicate wether a lawyer has been disciplined in the past. Some criminal lawyers will have earned a Martindale-Hubbel rating (although many good attorneys do not participate in this rating system), which is an ethics based rating, and will be a further indication of the thoroughness of a particular defence attorney. Find out wether a lawyer has taught law or had work published in legal publications; these are good indications of a defenderÂ’s experience and reputation amongst other attorneys.

One you have selected an attorney, reserve your final judgement until your first meeting. It is essential that you feel comfortable with the lawyer of your choice, and that you are confident of your practionerÂ’s skills and analysis of your case. If an attorney is somewhat lacking in experience, it is possible that this will be redeemed in this practitionerÂ’s character and the amount of work that will be dedicated to your case.
