There are eighteen correctional Institution in the state of Connecticut. Due to the decrease of the inmates population three of them closed. : Bergin Correctional Institution, Gates Correctional Institution and Webster Correctional Institution. Thirteen hold adult male offenders and the York Correctional Institution hold the female inmates. The Youthful Institution is located in Cheshire in New Haven County. Among the states of New England, Connecticut and New Hampshire are the only states to maintain death penalty. Male offenders in Death Row are executed in the Northern Correctional Institution in Somers ( Tolland county ) and female offenders receive death penalty in York Correctional Institution in Niantic. The execution method for criminal punishment is the lethal injection. The first and the only one until now who was executed by this method was the rapist and serial killer, Michael Bruce Ross, on May 13th 2005,. To be sentence to Death Row in Connecticut you must be convicted to a capital felony ( such as murdering a person under 16 years old) accompanied by one or more aggravating factors. In 2009 the Connecticut General Assembly tried to pass a bill to outlaw the death penalty for the future criminal punishment offenders but the Governor Jodi Tell used her right of veto. |
