DELAWARE also known as "the first state" or "the small wonder" was the first state to enter the Union the 7th December of 1787. It's also the second smallest state in area in the United States. The State has a Unified Correction system which means that only the Department of Correction of Delaware operates the correction facilities, so every offender is under the responsibility of the State. The State has got a unique system of sanctions in fact Delaware owns 5 sanctioning levels instead of the usual duality of probation or jail ; The first three levels establish the supervision of probation, from unsupervised to Intensive Probation supervision, level 4 covers house arrest and residential drug treatment, work release and the violation of probation incarceration. Finally, the level 5 include jail (for offenders sentenced for less than one year) and prison incarceration. Through the State of Delaware there are two correctional center or institution which house an all male population : James T Vaughn in Smyrna ( formerly known as Delaware Correctional Center ) and the Sussex Correctional Institution in Georgetown DE which also include the only Boot Camp of the state. Female inmates are hold in the Dolores J. Baylor Women's Correctional Institution in New Castle. The Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington DE accommodates male juvenile offenders who participate to the Young Offenders Program. Death Penalty is active in Delaware and criminal punishment method may be chosen by the Death Row inmates ( lethal injection or hanging ). |
