There are 9 correctional facilities in Hawaii, including 4 state prisons, one of which is a women's facility, and one federal prison. While there is a vast majority of men in correctional institutions in the state, there is concern about the number of women, which is rising at a fast pace. Between 2001 and 2004, the number of women in Hawaii's institutions grew by almost 33 per cent, a far greater statistic than for men. Many of these women are non-violent and suffer from substance abuse. Currently, there are just under 6000 inmates, men and women, throughout the state. Inmates have access to education programs, sex offender treatment and counselling for substance abuse problems, amongst other services. The Department of Corrections has also implemented a correctional industries division: this allows inmates to gain experience and work skills in preparation for re-entry into the community and the workforce at the end of their sentences. Capital punishment is not practiced in Hawaii, and there have been no executions since the state's entrance into the US.
