The goal of the prison system in Louisiana is to provide safety for offenders, staff and for the community around the facilities. The Department of Correction of Louisiana wants to diminish public risk when they release the inmates of their units, that's why they provide basic services to the offenders, such as health treatments and quality mental health services in particular.
They guarantee appropriate food, clothing and a shelter. The Department also propose a moral rehabilitation program to facilitate the future life of the offenders.
If you are a victim or a survivor of a crime which took place in the Louisiana State, you can contact the Crime Victim Services Bureau and request to apply for a Victim Offender Dialog. What is a VOD? It's a program which allow a victim of a crime to talk face to face to their offender, after a long process of preparation with a VOD facilitator who will hear your story and determine what do you really want from this confrontation. Death penalty is legal in Louisiana. Men's death row population are incarcerated in the Louisiana state penitentiary, also known as 'Angola'. It was nicknamed 'the Alcatraz of the South' by the Louisianians and it's the largest maximum security prison in the US, in fact more the 5000 offenders are currently in the facility. Women's death row inmates are waiting in the Louisiana Correctional Institute for women located in St Gabriel. The most famous offender in death row is Antoinette Frank, a former police officer who was convicted of a triple murder.
