To keep busy as many prisoners as possible, the Maine Department of Correction operates industries programs in their facilities. What kind of work an inmate will do? In Maine, industries programs include wood shop, garments, upholstery, embroidery, license plates, wood harvesting and engraving. There are 7 adult facilities inside the state included 3 correctional facilities which are called Bolduc, Charleston and Downeast. The Maine Correctional Center is located in Windham and the Maine state prison on Custing road in Warren. In the Maine's prison web you can also find the Central Maine Pre-release center and the Women's Reentry center in Bangor. The central office of the juvenile services is located in Augusta inside the Elkins Building on Tyson drive. Criminal punishment is not effective in the state. On november 21, 1885, Daniel Wilkinson was hanged, unfortunately the hangman's knot was poorly tied and the convict died slowly of strangulation. He was the last person executed in Maine, in fact 2 years after, in 1887, the death penalty was abolished in Maine. The execution of Daniel Wilkinson is still an argument used to show the inhumanity of criminal punishment by the abolitionists. For first degree murder, Maine law provide life sentence without the possibility of parole. |
