It is the largest maximum security prison in the United States with 5000 offenders and 1800 staff. It is located on an 18000 acre (73 km²) property that was previously the Angola and other plantations owned by Isaac Franklin in unincorporated West Feliciana Parish, close to the Mississippi border. The prison is located at the end of Louisiana Highway 66, and is about 22 miles (35 km) northwest of St. Francisville. Angola is bordered on three sides by the Mississippi River. As of 1995 Burl Cain is the warden. The State of Louisiana's death row for men and the state execution chamber are there. In the State of Louisiana the names 'Louisiana State Penitentiary' and 'Angola,' the name of the post office that serves the prison, are used interchangeably. Before 1835, state inmates lived in a jail in New Orleans. The first Louisiana State Penitentiary, located at the intersection of 6th Street and Laurel Street in Baton Rouge, was modeled off of a prison in Wethersfield, Connecticut.
