The state of North Carolina currently counts over 40000 offenders incarcerated throughout the state, out of a total population of almost 9400000 people. Although there are 70 institutions over the entire state, there is a slight crowding problem in correctional facilities as the number of inmates exceeds the total prison capacity of 40014. Prisoners have access to several programs aiming to aid in self-improvement. These include a variety of education programs, ranging from vocational education to a specialized course on awareness of domestic violence issues. Other services include counselling, religious support, and drug and alcohol addiction treatment. Offenders placed in minimum security facilities also have access to community work programs, which aid prisoners soon to be released with rehabilitation into life outside of an institution. North Carolina authorizes the death penalty, which is administered solely by lethal injection. There are currently 157 inmates on death row, of who153 are male. Despite this elevated number, no executions have taken place in North Carolina in over five years. |
