The last execution to take place in North Dakota occurred in 1905, although the death penalty was only officially abolished in 1975. Since that time, some have believed that capital punishment should be reinstated as a legal practice. A bill which would have authorized executions in the state came under consideration in 1995, but the idea was turned down for economic and moral reasons. The state prison population is of over 1300 people out of a state-wide population of close to 642000. The state in ranked 50th least violent of all US states, having the lowest occurrence of violent crimes per 100000 inhabitants. Prisoners have access to important services including psychological and medical treatment, as well as aid in rehabilitation and recovery. Inmates also have access to education and work programs during their time in incarceration; Rough Rider Industries, for example, is a furniture company created specifically in the aim of allowing North Dakota inmates to develop skills in a workplace, whilst creating items of furniture for sale to the general public. Victims of crime in North Dakota are kept informed of offender and criminal case information by the VINE network. Two grant programs have also been put in place for the victims of crime in this state. |
