Correctional Facilities and Public Records in OH
The death penalty is currently legal in the state of Ohio. Capital punishment is administered by lethal injection only, with a one-drug policy established in 2009 allowing only sodium to be used in executions.
Out of Ohio's population of over 11464000 people, approximately 51000 currently reside in one of the state's 31 correctional facilities.
Visitors to inmates must first have their names places on an offender's visitation list, and fill out a visitor application packet. Recently, video visitation has been put in place in selected institutions to allow families and friends of inmates to communicate through video (through Global Tel*Link). This option is ideal for family members or close friends living at a distance from an inmate's correctional facility.
Volunteering in Ohio institutions is welcomed by the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. Areas available for volunteers to become involved in include counselling, work placement training, religious programs, arts programs and rehabilitation assistance. Anyone wishing to volunteer must be over the age of 18 and must not be currently supervised by the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. However, people who have been incarcerated in the past and are familiar with the process of rehabilitation into the community are encouraged to volunteer in order to offer help to current inmates.
