17 institutions are currently in operation in Oklahoma, along with several community corrections centers, private prisons, community release centers and halfway houses to cater for more than 23 300 prisoners and 28 400 probationers state wide. Capital punishment is still legal in Oklahoma and is practiced by lethal injection. If this method is ever to be found unconstitutional, electrocution, and, alternatively, firing squad, may be permitted methods of execution. Since 1915, 179 people have been executed in the state. Currently, 69 people live on death row, with no scheduled executions. Support exists for victims of crime and people desiring information about offenders. A full register of prisoners is available to the public, as well as a sex offender registry and a violent offender registry. While incarcerated, prisoners are offered support through educational programs and community work programs. Oklahoma boasts of a 'Friends for Folks' program, which allows inmates to train companion dogs for seniors. This initiative, begun in 1990, allows offenders to develop a sense of empathy with the animals as well as develop a relationship with the community at large through their work. |
