Oregon allows the practice of capital punishment by lethal injection. Though there are currently 37 people on death row, no executions have taken place in the state since 1996, and, since 1976 only two people have faced the death penalty, both voluntarily.
Within a state population of approximately 3650000 people, there are currently over 13 000 prisoners in Oregon's correctional facilities. If friends or family of an inmate in the state wish to make a visit to an institution, one must first be placed on an approved list of visitors. Inmates must apply to add any person to this list, and visitors must fill out a form and have a police checked performed before being cleared. Potential visitors cannot be given information on their visitor status by staff over the phone - it is an inmate's responsibility to inform prospective visitors of the success of their application.
Victims of crime in Oregon are informed of criminal and criminal cases information through the VINE telephone network (Victim Information and Notification Everywhere.) A facilitated dialogue program also exists free of charge for victims and offenders who wish to communicate. This involves a dialogue, always initiated by the victim, overseen by a volunteer facilitator trained in mediation to ensure that contact will be meaningful and beneficial to both parties. Other victim services include a Department of Corrections victim services contact information line and a Victim Speakers Network.
