Correctional Facilities and Public Records in PA
26 state institutions as well as community correction centers, contract facilities and county jails exist in Pennsylvania. The state has a large prison population of 71000 people, and a state-wide population of close to 12 300 000.
Inmates in institutions have access to email and bank accounts through JPAY. If a friend or family member wishes to send a money order to an inmate, this can be done electronically through the JPAY system. The Pennsylvanian department of corrections provides two hotlines in the case of abuse to an inmate, one to report staff administered abuse and another to report inmate on inmate sexual misconduct or abuse. Reporting incidents can be done anonymously and will result in an investigation to settle the issue at hand. Victims are kept informed on offender and criminal case matters through PA SAVIN (Pennsylvania Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification.) The AlertPA system will inform of prison emergencies through home or cell phone, email or text message, to friends or family of inmates who wish to be notified in the case of an emergency.
Pennsylvania allows capital punishment to be practiced solely by lethal injection. Since 1995, three executions have been carried out.
