Rhode Island has 8 operational correction facilities throughout the state, including one intake center, a high security center, two maximum security facilities, two medium, and two minimum security prisons. The state prison population is at 3450 out of over 1 076 000 residents living throughout Rhode Island. The state can be viewed as relatively safe, ranked 40th on the list of most violent states (based on the number of violent crimes per 100 000 people.) Rhode Island government abolished the death penalty in 1984, though it had not been enforced since the state's last execution was held in 1930. The Rhode Island Department of Corrections has put in place programs to connect with the community in an attempt to keep crime rates low. SCORE, the Special Community Outreach Education, aims to educate students in schools on issues surrounding crime and punishment. Another initiative enabling Rhode Island residents to stay out of correction facilities is the jail diversion program for veterans struggling with substance abuse. This program takes the form of treatment against substance abuse for offenders in the place of serving time in an institution. |
