Correctional Facilities and Public Records in SD
There are three main adult correctional facilities in South Dakota, as well as a prison annex, three minimum security facilities and several juvenile corrections programs. Currently, there are approximately 3100 inmates incarcerated in state facilities throughout South Dakota. The state has an important community service program for minimum security prisoners. Community work has had benefits both for the inmates, who are given the opportunity to develop work skills and personal values, and for the community, benefiting of free labor. Inmates are given opportunities to work in many different fields. These include areas of government (for example, the Department of Education or the South Dakota Highway Patrol) and on local projects (such as clean-up and building work.) The South Dakota Department of Corrections participates in the Performance-Based Measures System, which places a national standard on the efficiency of state institutions, including standards of public safety, education, and mental health in state institutions. The death penalty is legal by lethal injection in South Dakota, although there has been some recent debate about wether or not this should continue. An attempt to repeal the death penalty was made last year when a bill which would have made capital punishment obsolete was unsuccessfully heard.
