Tennessee, the state with the fourth highest rate of violent crimes, has an inmate population of almost 26 000 residents. The death penalty is currently in place in Tennessee, and the state has a number of 87 prisoners on death row as of July 2011. Lethal injection is generally the legal method of execution, however, inmates sentenced prior the year 1999 may choose electrocution if preferred. State institutions in Tennessee offer educational services, which around 20 per cent of inmates choose to take advantage of. Inmates can also work during their time in a correction facility, performing duties such as cooking or cleaning, allowing for new skills and ethics to be developed. Pre-release programs, religious services, and substance abuse treatment is also available to prisoners in Tennessee. The Department of Corrections also provide services to the victims of crime, such as the 'Victim Service Bureau', allowing victims to share their stories. Applications to volunteer for the Department of Corrections are welcome in Tennesse, where approximately 5000 volunteers are already active assisting inmates in areas such as education, counselling and religion. |
