The state of Texas still enforces capital punishment, which is practiced strictly by lethal injection, and an offender can only be sentenced to death if the crime committed was an aggravated criminal homicide. The prison population is currently at 168 105 inmates for a population of just under 22 900 000 residents throughout the state. Texas has been ranked as having the 12th greatest rate of violent crimes per 100 000 residents. To promote public safety, prevent crime and consequently limit the intake of prisoners, Texas has a prison deterrence education program in place to educate community members on the decisions which may lead to prison. The state also has an extensive victim services division, and provides victims with information through VINE, the Victims Information and Notification Everyday.
Within state institutions, several rehabilitation programs have been put in place to educate and provide needed treatment for inmates. This includes, amongst various other programs, sex offender and substance abuse treatments, a mother and baby bonding program, and online education courses. |
