Capital punishment is still practiced in Utah. The legal method of execution is by lethal injection, although, if this is ever declared unconstitutional, the alternative is execution by firing squad. Ronnie Lee Gardner, an inmate executed in 2010, was the first person on death row to choose this method in the last 15 years. There is currently a growing shift in the state away from sentencing executions and a sway towards giving out life sentences to offenders. The Utah Department of Corrections provides service to victims of crime through the free of charge, anonymous VINE notification system throughout the state. Other services include a full sex offender registry and a most wanted list available online. Many programs are also put in place to improve the quality of life of inmates in prison. Offenders have access to library services and education programs, including a specialized 'Reading for the Blind' program and a work program, to teach new skills to inmates and provide them with an occupation. Treatment programs include substance abuse treatment and sex offender treatment. Inmates also have access to spiritual programs and recreational activities.
