Jail Criminal Record Jails in Virginia
Correctional Facilities and Public Records in VA
Virginia has a fairly large inmate population, with over 35 000 people currently incarcerated in institutions. The state has 39 major facilities, including work centers and medical centers or hospitals, to cater for this group. In spite of these numbers, Virginia is ranked at a low 35th place on the US' rank of states by frequency of violent crimes. The death penalty is still legal in Virginia, where inmates on death row are executed either by lethal injection or electrocution, according to choice. Executions are more common in Virginia than in any other state with a population of over one million (Virgina's population is currently at roughly 7 500 000), having executed more people than in any other densely populated state. Virginia has been one of some states to entirely abolish parole. Parole is not available for offenders whose crimes dated later than January 1, 1995. This is held to be in the name of public safety - some prisoners, however, have claimed to have the right to parole after having served long sentences. The Department of Corrections in Virginia provides information to victims of crime through the VINE network and a Virginia based free of charge telephone network.
