12 prisons currently operate in Washington State, four of which are minimum security, sheltering inmates who are to be released within four years. There are currently approximately 16000 inmates in Washington, the vast majority of who are Caucasian males. Inmates can benefit from various programs including vocational education, psychological treatment and visitation programs. Washington victims of crime are serviced by VINE, the Victim and Information Notification Everyday service, for updates on custody statuses and other relevant information online, by phone or through telecommunication device for the deaf. There is also a victims services program run by the Department of Corrections in Washington which provides assistance with issues such as safety concerns and, if desired, victim and offender meetings. Capital punishment is currently practiced in Washington, and is administered by lethal injection. If the convicted offender chooses, execution can also be carried out by hanging. |
