Correctional Facilities and Public Records in WV
West Virginia has 12 state correctional facilities in operation and 4 Work Release Centers. West Virginia's oldest prison, the West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville, is no longer in operation. However, its beautiful structure and rumors of haunting have made it a popular tourist attraction.
There are currently 7000 inmates across West Virginia in functioning prisons. Inmates are provided with correctional programs to aid them during their prison stay. These are, among others, an anger management program, education on drug and alcohol issues, a women's addiction program and crime victim awareness program, to help offenders understand the effects of crime on others. The West Virginia Department of Corrections has been notably active in providing assistance to victims, especially those who have been the targets of domestic violence. All victims are serviced by the VINE network, as in most other states, which provides information on inmates, such as release dates, and criminal cases.
West Virginia became the twelfth state to abolish capital punishment in 1965, though some debate still continues over wether or not this sentence should be legal to carry out.
