Correctional Facilities and Public Records in WY
The state of Wyoming still enforces capital punishment, which is practiced by lethal injection. If this is ever declared unconstitutional, execution by gas is the alternative. The death penalty for juveniles, however, was abolished in 2007. The death penalty appears rarely to be applied; as of January 2011, there was just one inmate on death row. The inmate population is also relatively small, at just under 2000 prisoners throughout the state's correction facilities.
The VINE network for victim notification of information regarding inmates is operational state-wide. Wyoming boasts of a Wild Horse Program, a rehabilitation program for inmates which allows offenders to work with horses. The program aims to help inmates develop respect and empathy before their release through their contact with the animals. Other, less unusual programs for inmates include mental health programs, education and addiction treatment. Volunteering in prisons and applying for work in the Wyoming Department of Corrections is always encouraged.
